Copper is a centuries-old friend in the architecture industry due to the material's longevity, recyclability, and of course, its aesthetically appealing natural finish. To this day, copper is still used in contemporary design as seen in the winning projects of the North American Copper Awards in Architecture. Established in 2008, the NACIA awards distinguishes some of the most creative copper and copper alloy architectural design based throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The winning group of projects this year comprised of new and historic buildings for restoration and renovation purposes, including a museum in Ohio, a health science center in Ontario, Canada, and two residential homes, to name a few. Entries are submitted to three categories: New Construction, Renovation/Restoration, and Ornamental Applications. Winners were recognized during the NACIA Awards Ceremony that took place in Philadelphia's Power Plant Production in May.

“Every year I'm impressed by the ingenious and unconventional applications architects derive from this age-old metal,” said Stephen Knapp of the Copper Development Association, which co-organizes the yearly awards with the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association (CCBDA). The winning projects also exemplify the “formability and durability of copper, [as well as] the incredible diversity in the world of architecture,” Knapp continued.
