Wondering what architecture and design events are happening around New York City? Bustler rounded up a snappy list of event recommendations worth checking out. This week, Lorcan O'Herlihy, Brian Philips, and Lawrence Scarpa will take part in a discussion about the pressing topic of affordable housing in North America; SOM will celebrate the launch of The Future of Public Space; and MoMA's “Thinking Machines: Art and Design in the Computer Age” exhibition is still open now through April. Read on for our latest weekly event recommendations.

Affordable Housing in North America | March 20

How do architects in North American cities approach the design of affordable housing? This program will look at projects based in cities besides New York to shed light on how architects work with local conditions to tackle the growing need for well-designed affordable housing. Speakers include Lorcan O'Herlihy, Brian Philips, and Lawrence Scarpa.

The Future of Public Space | March 21

In a collection of short but intellectually invigorating reads, The Future of Public Space reflects on these possibilities beyond typical contexts, exploring a wide variety of impacts that different types of public space – urban and rural, real and virtual – can have on everyday experiences in an increasingly privatized world...Please join us in celebrating the release of The Future of Public Space with a live panel that folds this conversation back onto the world of design, featuring innovative practitioners working to implement bold and challenging ideas in the public realm.

Thinking Machines: Art and Design in the Computer Age | Open now until April 8

Drawn primarily from MoMA’s collection, Thinking Machines: Art and Design in the Computer Age, 1959–1989 brings artworks produced using computers and computational thinking together with notable examples of computer and component design. The exhibition reveals how artists, architects, and designers operating at the vanguard of art and technology deployed computing as a means to reconsider artistic production.
