Our friends at DawnTown continue to uphold innovative ideas in the Miami architecture scene with their Wynwood Gateway Park Competition. Just recently, the winners were announced for the international competition, which challenged participants to design a 14,000-sq.ft urban park and garden to be realized at the Wynwood Gateway Complex near Downtown Miami.

The competition garnered over 238 submissions from interdisciplinary teams from over 20 countries. Three winning teams were selected under anonymity by the jury (members listed below):

  • 1ST PLACE (US$10,000): "Wynwood Greenhouse" by artist Jim Drain, landscape architect Roberto Rovira, and architect Nick Gelpi
  • 2ND PLACE ($5,000): “Graffito Green” by Meyer + Silberberg Land Architects from Berkeley, California
  • 3RD PLACE ($2,500): “Wynwood Commons” by Solid Objectives - Idenburg Liu/SO-IL from Brooklyn, New York

The winning proposal will be constructed and implemented as part of the second phase for the Wynwood Gateway Complex development, which will be built as a dynamic entryway for the Wynwood neighborhood.

More details below.

"'We are thrilled to announce Greenhouse as the winning design concept for the Wynwood Gateway Park,' said Tony Cho, Metro 1 President and CEO. 'It’s remarkable the only local team to enter the completion was unanimously selected by a blind jury, but I think that serves as a testament to this talented group’s true understanding of the project’s significance on a global scale and their ability to synergistically combine their individual strengths for one truly impressive vision.'

Wynwood Greenhouse was designed to serve as the intersection of art, architecture, and landscape for a local community with global presence, according to its design team members."

"'We are truly honored to be selected from among such a prestigious group of competitors. We look forward to working with the City of Miami and Metro 1 to realize an ambitious vision that acknowledges the vibrancy of the Wynwood neighborhood and that emphasizes the unique natural wonders of South Florida. We hope that our park will  be a place    where people come together with nature and art in an urban environment, where everyone can feel at home and where people and nature thrive together,' said Nick Gelpi, Roberto Rovira and Jim Drain in a statement."

The jury featured: Enrique Norten – Founding Principal, TEN Arquitectos; Terrance Riley – Principal - Keenan/Riley; Former Director of Miami Art Museum and Museum of Modern Art; Raymond Jungles ASLA – FASLA, PLA, Founding Principal of Raymond Jungles, Inc.;  Allan Shulman FAIA, Principal - Shulman + Associates; James Russell, FAIA - architecture critic and journalist;  Andrew  Frey – Development Manager - Codina Group; Founder - DawnTown; Tony Cho  – CEO and Founder - Metro 1 and Moderator- Joachim Perez - Executive Director of DawnTown.
