Winners of the 2010 KPF / AF Student Travel Award Nandi Marshal Han and Philip Turner will present their work and research at a public event at the AF’s Project Space on Wednesday 15 September.
Nandi Marshal Han said:
'This year’s KPF/AF Travel Award has assisted me in finalising my MA & BArch research and projects. My research aims to unlock the maze of how macro-level urban spaces have influence on micro-level human behaviour, and how to stimulate sustainable local communities.'
Talking about his trip to China, Philip Turner commented:
'Beijing is the capital of the fastest ever growing country and has become in recent years an experimental blank canvas for a surge of international architects. The pace, ambition and excess of so many new buildings has changed the face of the city in an alarmingly short space of time. I was honored to receive second prize in the KPF/AF traveling scholarship awards which has allowed me to closely observe the social and architectural intricacies of this fascinating city in flux.’
The KPF / AF Student Travel Award is sponsored by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) and organised by the Architecture Foundation (AF). Now in its 6th year, the award supports the industry’s emerging talent by encouraging new creative thinking and engagement in international research.
This year’s jury included John Bushell and Mustafa Chehabeddine, Principals at KPF; Sarah Ichioka, Director, The Architecture Foundation; Ellie Stathaki - Deputy Architecture Editor, Wallpaper and Rebecca Roberts, winner of the 1st prize KPF/AF Student Travel Award in 2008.
Previous Prize winners include Je Ahn and Maria Smith recipients of the first prize in 2006 who went on to form the practice Studio Weave, noted for their winning project ‘140 Boomerangs’ which was included in the London Architecture Biennale (now the London Festival of Architecture) and more recently their design for the world’s longest bench in Littlehampton, East Sussex.
