All you music buffs out there, listen up! Celebrate summer with New York City's 9th annual Make Music New York festival on June 21 -- the first day of the season. As the flagship event of Make Music Day, the one-day festival boasts over 1,000 concerts of various music genres throughout NYC's five borroughs for all to gather 'round and enjoy.
This year, MMNY is currently crowdsourcing funds on Indiegogo for an architectural music performance called Concerto for Buildings. Two NYC youth orchestra ensembles, Face The Music and Mantra Youth Percussion, will play their hearts out as they're surrounded by SoHo's 19th-century cast-iron buildings. The composers and percussionists will "collaborate" with these historic structures and transform them into a complementary musical backdrop.
More about the concert below.
Face The Music and Mantra Youth Percussion will take over Greene St. at Broome St. to perform the 30-minute Concerto for Buildings at 2 p.m. on June 21, 2015. Concerto for Buildings is a new work featuring a full orchestra and 24 percussionists, who will play four separate movements by four composers: Paula Matthusen (winner of the 2014-2015 Rome Prize), Scott Wollshleger, Daniel Goode, and Elijah Valongo (a student-composer in Face The Music).
Make Music New York turned to crowdsourcing to raise necessary funds to bring the show to life:
"We are asking our community of friends and supporters to help us make history, help create an unforgettable experience for New York City, and help bring a singular and engaging piece of music to life. By contributing to this campaign you will be funding the composers who are writing these works, the rental of a professional sound system and personnel, instrument rental, music stands, chairs, and tents for the kids and their instruments."
