Bustler's Highlights of the Most Notable Architecture Events for Summer 2019

With an overwhelming number of architecture and design events around the globe, the Bustler team is on a mission to highlight the most noteworthy festivals, biennales, expos, exhibitions, and more that are relevant to professionals, students, and any diehard architecture enthusiast. 

With summer just around the corner, it wouldn't hurt to start planning ahead! From finding out what design trends lie ahead, to exploring periods of uncertainty through art, to networking with fellow design professionals and industry leaders, here is Bustler’s event master list of upcoming events for the summer season! 

MAY

Setouchi Triennale 2019 | Apr 26-Nov 4 | Naoshima and 11 other surrounding islands in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan

The Setouchi Triennale is the contemporary art festival in which you can experience the culture and lifestyles of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. Installations and pavilions by internationally acclaimed artists and architects like James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Tadao Ando, and SANAA dot the scenic landscape of a dozen tiny islands.

NYCxDESIGN 2019 | May 10-22 | New York, NY

Attracting thousands of attendees and designers from across the globe, NYCxDESIGN showcases over a dozen disciplines through a multitude of exhibitions, installations, panels, trade shows, open studios, and more.

Nature—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial | May 10-Jan 20, 2020 | Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, NY & Cube design museum, The Netherlands

The exhibition themes explore seven strategies that designers are using to collaborate with nature—to understand, remediate, simulate, salvage, nurture, augment, and facilitate. The outcomes are speculative or practical and reveal new materials, creative methods, and inventive technologies. These provocations and solutions put forth by today’s extraordinary design teams serve as encouragement for an enduring and more respectful partnership with nature.

Venice Art Biennale | May 11 - Nov 2 | Venice, Italy

The 58th International Art Exhibition, titled “May You Live In Interesting Times”, will exhibit artworks that “reflect upon precarious aspects of existence today, including different threats to key traditions, institutions and relationships of the ‘post-war order.’’ Among the 91 national participants, five countries will be making their Venice Art Biennale debut: Algeria, Ghana, Madagascar, Malaysia, and Pakistan. The Dominican Republic will exhibit its first national pavilion at the Art Biennale.

Habitat EXPO19 | May 23, 2019 - May 25 | Mexico City, Mexico

Taking place in prominent venues throughout Mexico City, the three-day Habitat EXPO19 will feature over 300 exhibitors from the architecture and interior design fields, presenting a big opportunity for professional networking and getting a glimpse into what design trends lie ahead in the industry.

Ballpark, by Paul Goldberger | Jun 1 | Los Angeles, CA

Join us at the Archinect Outpost for a conversation between Paul Goldberger and Archinect founder and director Paul Petrunia on the content of Goldberger's latest book, Ballpark. From Penguin Random House: “Paul Goldberger makes clear the inextricable bond between the American city and America’s favorite pastime. In the changing locations and architecture of our ballparks, Goldberger reveals the manifestations of a changing society...”

The London Festival of Architecture 2019 | Jun 1- Jun 30 | London, UK

Through an annual month-long festival each June, the London Festival of Architecture engages the public and the profession in the conversation around architecture and the city. Featuring over 500 events, this year's festival explores the timely theme of “Boundaries”.

Atlanta Design Festival 2019 | Jun 1-Jul 9 | Atlanta, GA

The Atlanta Design Festival aims to spread awareness about the potentially significant impact of design in Atlanta's economic growth. The nine-day citywide festival will present numerous showroom presentations, talks, installations, and satellite architecture tours.

AIA Conference on Architecture 2019 | Jun 6-8 | Las Vegas, NV

Happening in Las Vegas, whose evolving landscape exemplifisd the type of transformation that influences global architecture and design trends, the 2019 AIA Conference will be jam-packed with sessions covering relevant topics like artificial intelligence, 3D concrete printing, the Amazon Spheres, tall wood, immigrant architects, overcoming homelessness, and the energy-hog myth, just to name a few. There will also be architectural tours of local landmarks like Frank Gehry’s Lou Ruvo Brain Center, Seven Magic Mountains, and the Downtown Container Park.

2019 Intersections Symposium at A'19 Conference | Jun 6-8 | Las Vegas, NV

While you're at the AIA Conference, check out the AIA and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture's INTERSECTIONS Symposium of Education, Research, and Practice. This series will showcase exemplary research project ideas that address issues related to the theme: BOTTOM-UP SOCIAL CHANGE: Materials | Buildings | Community.

NeoCon 2019 | Jun 10-12 | Chicago, IL

Featuring 500 top companies and attracting 50,000 design professionals, NeoCon serves as the commercial design industry’s launch pad for innovation—offering ideas and introductions that shape the built environment today and into the future. The event is accompanied by an educational program of 100 accredited seminars.

Bauhaus Beginnings | Jun 11-Oct 13 | Los Angeles, CA

Marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus school, the Getty Research Institute exhibition “Bauhaus Beginnings” considers the school’s early dedication to spiritual expression and its development of a curriculum based on the elements deemed fundamental to all forms of artistic practice. More than 250 rare objects from the school's founding and early years will be on view.

Barcelona Design Week 2019 | Jun 12-Jun 19 | Barcelona, Spain

The yearly event celebrates the design and innovation in Barcelona, serving as a meeting point for professionals, entrepreneurs, companies, and enthusiasts of creativity. The 2019 theme,TRANSITIONS, asks: “Do we know the key role of design when it comes to facing transitions?”

Art Basel | Jun 13-16 | Basel, Switzerland

Art Basel's world-leading shows in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami connect collectors, galleries, and artists, and are a driving force in supporting the role galleries play in nurturing the careers of artists. The Basel show brings the international artworld together, with the world's leading galleries showing the works of over 4,000 artists.

San Francisco Design Week 2019 | Jun 20-Jun 28 | San Francisco, CA

Through studio tours and events, SFDW celebrates this spirit of newness by providing unique access to exhibitions and conversations with the designers who are shaping the future.

Young Architects Program 2019: Hórama Rama by Pedro & Juana | Jun 28-Sep 2 | Long Island City, NY

This year’s winning MoMA PS1 YAP architectural installation, Hórama Rama, is an immersive junglescape set within a large-scale cyclorama that sits atop MoMA PS1’s courtyard walls. The installation will serve as a temporary built environment for MoMA PS1’s anticipated “Warm Up” outdoor music series.

JULY

Lawn | Jul 4-Sep 2 | Washington D.C.

LAWN is the 2019 Summer Block Party installation at the National Building Museum. Designed by LAB at Rockwell Group, it will be an immersive installation taking up the entirety of the Museum’s Great Hall. Guests will be able to unwind with quintessential summer activities and enjoy interactive experiences for all ages.

SIGGRAPH 2019 | Jul 28-Aug 1 | Los Angeles, CA

What helps you thrive? Perhaps it’s experiencing the latest gaming and AI technology, or presenting the latest innovations in your field. Maybe it’s mixing it up with thought leaders and adding your voice. Whatever it is, you'll find it at SIGGRAPH 2019, taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Seattle Design Festival 2019: BALANCE | Aug 16-Aug 25 | Seattle, WA

Founded in 2011 to celebrate the ways that design enhances life in the city, the Seattle Design Festival is back for its ninth edition as the year of Balance. The festival brings together 120+ partners and attracts over 30,000 attendees to 80+ citywide events every August.

Sao Paulo Design Weekend | Aug 18-Aug 25 | Sao Paulo, Brazil

Now in its 8th edition that's taking place in Sao Paulo, the festival aims to promote design culture and its connections with architecture, art, decoration, urbanism, social inclusion, business and technological innovation.

Exhibit Columbus 2019 Exhibition | Aug 24-Dec 1 | Columbus, IN
