Archinect Launches Open Call for Submissions: Learning

As the role of “the architect” seems to expand ever outwards, the architect’s education hasn’t exactly kept pace. While the profession delves into new territories, its optimism and diversification run parallel to the bloat of inflated degrees, unpaid labor and student debt that have come to characterize educational institutions at large. What’s an aspiring architect to do? As current academic models appear less and less adept at teaching architecture as we know it, perhaps a pedagogical break is needed to better understand: “How on Earth should we teach architecture?”

This September, Archinect is considering all aspects of 'Learning' from pedagogy to continuing education to psychology. And their open call for submissions is looking for projects and writing that reconsider one of the core aspects of architecture education: the studio.

》PROJECT SUBMISSIONS: A New Studio

There weren’t always Kuka robots on every corner. The studio space where architects do the majority of their work at school can resemble a cubicle, brimming with model/sketching detritus and computer hardware, or a long communal table, or maybe a sea of beanbag chairs with easy outlet access. There’s probably bedding somewhere, just in case. As design methods and academic expectations change, so do studios. What might the perfect studio be for today's student architect? Send Archinect your fantasy designs for a student’s studio space.

》EDITORIAL SUBMISSIONS: A New Syllabus

Here’s your chance to play teacher and run your own architecture course. Stick to Deleuze, assign stand-up comedy, organize a study-trip to the original Taco Bell—the studio is your playground to mold the minds of future architects. Based on the format of a single-semester’s syllabus, outline a studio course from start to finish, complete with a course title and whatever pedagogical elements you like.

Note: Archinect will also review submissions that combine both Project and Editorial prompts—the syllabus and studio designed in tandem. Archinect is also always open to reviewing submissions of student work, but especially under this month's theme!

The deadline for submitting is Sunday, September 25 at 11:59 pm (PST).

The open call is not a contest. Archinect will review submissions for publication as they are received, and feature as many as deemed worthy. Due to the volume of inquiries received, Archinect can only respond to a submission if it is featured.
