2016 VMODERN Furniture Design winners announced!

By Justine Testado|

Monday, Nov 21, 2016

The VMODERN Furniture Design competition has concluded its 2016 edition. eVolo Magazine — the creators of the popular Skyscraper Competition — launched the VMODERN ideas competition to create a forum to discuss and debate the future of innovative furniture design. Back for another year, the competition invited participants across the globe to submit their most creative furniture designs in progress, prototypes, and/or concepts.

The jury evaluated the 165 entries (which came in from 28 countries) on originality, feasibility, function, creativity, and aesthetics. In the end, three lucky winners and 20 honorable mentions were selected.

Check out the winning designs below.

1ST PLACE: “Wave-Part” by David Beirne, Canan Karahasanoglu, and Trayan Andonov Haralanov | United Kingdom and Turkey

1ST PLACE: “Wave-Part” by David Beirne, Canan Karahasanoglu, and Trayan Andonov Haralanov | United Kingdom and Turkey

Project description: “Wave-Part is a luminous wireframe developed around the principles of generative parametric design and fractal growth. The core modular form and interconnectivity of the fixture facilitates its adaptive development from the singular entity to the collective of multi entity arrangements, right through to entire lighting systems.”

2ND PLACE: “lightCAGE” by Emmanuel Osorno | United States

2ND PLACE: “lightCAGE” by Emmanuel Osorno | United States

Project description: “lightCAGE [is] a pendant light that poses itself as a body in tension with the light that inhabits it. The quintessential conflicting duality of lamps, housing vs light, is reframed to form an object that is inherently defiant of the light source as the primordial element: it forces it to reside within its ribs, diffracting its rays as they escape. As the shadows of its geometry are casted over its surroundings, lightCAGE is able to augment its presence in space.”

3RD PLACE: “ROD” by Maria Smigielska and Pierre Cutellic | Switzerland

3RD PLACE: “ROD” by Maria Smigielska and Pierre Cutellic | Switzerland

Project description: “ROD is a front desk digitally fabricated using robots to bend steel rods. This project is an investigation on the use of robots for specialized fabircation techniques that allow the use of traditional materials in a novel way.”

You can find the Honorable Mentions in the image gallery below. You can find full details of all the prize-winning and honorable mention projects here.

The 2016 VMODERN jury included: Brad Ascalon - principal Brad Ascalon Studio NYC; Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen - partner Norm.Architects; Peter Donders - principal Peter Donders, Morphs, Morphsine; Kasper Rønn von Lotzbeck - partner Norm.Architects; and David Trubridge - principal David Trubridge.
