Bustler's curated picks of new architecture and design competitions this week feature four calls seeking built projects, works in progress, and unbuilt ideas reimagining Brooklyn, proposals that envision transportation infrastructure as both functional public works and civic landmarks, excellent and original housing design, and innovative projects by design students from around the world.

Brooklyn NOW! 2026
Registration/Submission Deadline: Sunday, March 22, 2026

"Brooklyn NOW! 2026, presented at the Brooklyn Public Library – Library for Arts & Culture, celebrates the design forces actively shaping our borough today. Opening in April 2026, the exhibition highlights how architects, builders, and visionaries are reimagining Brooklyn’s streets, homes, and civic spaces. The exhibition will be accompanied by five in-person public programs, including a gallery opening that invites visitors to engage directly with the ideas and people behind the work."

Beautifying Transportation Infrastructure Challenge
Registration/Submission Deadline: Wednesday, May 13, 2026

"The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Beautifying Transportation Infrastructure Challenge invites participants to develop visual and conceptual proposals that reimagine transportation infrastructure as both functional public works and meaningful civic landmarks. The competition is looking for ideas that integrate beauty, public experience, regional character, and American architectural heritage into infrastructure such as bridges and overpasses, transit and mobility hubs, corridors and streetscapes, gateways and entries, plazas and transportation-connected public spaces, rural transportation features, and intermodal connections."

AR House awards 2026
Registration/Submission Deadline: Friday, July 3, 2026

"Launched in 2010, the AR House awards recognise originality and excellence in the design of dwellings. The house is a key rite of passage for architects, critical to the ferment and crystallisation of new ideas, offering the potential for innovation. The awards recognise projects built in the last five years that demonstrate creativity, originality and ideas that push the house forward – whatever the scale or construction cost. The judges’ chosen projects will all be visited by an independent critic and photographer before a decision is made on the winner."
