HEAR LA workshop | July 29, recommended by Justine Testado

Spruce up your next design installation with immersive sound. Don't know how? Learn how to create your own quadraphonic audio recordings at this workshop with the help of artist George Jensen at Materials & Applications. Based on the “Hear LA: An Audio Document of Los Angeles” sound installation at M&A's TURF mini-golf course, Jensen will demonstrate how to capture sounds around L.A. and offer advice on field recording techniques and devices.

The Films of Ed Ruscha: Premium and Miracle | July 31, recommended by Nicholas Korody

If there's something like an architect's artist, then Ed Ruscha would be it. His photographic studies of Sunset Boulevard are, literally, studied in architecture school; his paintings of gas stations – sometimes on fire – perfectly represent a unique Southern California typology. Head over to MOCA for a rare chance to catch the only two films Ruscha ever made.

If by chance the title didn’t tip you off, this exhibition at L.A.’s Hammer Museum is all about Los Angeles artists practicing in a vast variety of disciplines, and their relationship to the global art network. Relishing those wandering prepositions, the exhibition isn’t about making a grand statement, but attesting to the uniqueness and diversity of work coming from the region. Hurry up and see it while you still can – it’s on view through August 28.
