6 Architecture and Design Competitions Focusing on Urbanism, Climate Change, and Community-Driven Design

Much is changing in the world, and if there is anything the last several months have taught us, it's that "returning to normalcy" can't be the goal for a more progressive future. As an industry, we need to dissect and rework design methods to help all communities thrive. As firms and designers aim to move forward, here are six competitions that can help you be a part of the movement towards fostering change.

TEAM20 8th Annual Architecture and Urban Planning Graduation Project Competition
Register/Submit Deadline:  Tuesday, Jun 30, 2020

On June 1st, 2020, TEAM20 kicks off its 8th Annual Architecture and Urban Planning Horizon Award. Since 2013, TEAM20 has been hosting the competition for architecture graduates from world-known universities and colleges in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, TEAM20 hosts this year’s competition online and has the opportunity to open its doors to invite more participants from all over the world. The main purpose of the Award is to create a platform for these graduation projects to be seen. The host also perceives these projects to be the intermedium of cultural exchanges between different backgrounds. The goal of this event is for these graduates to demonstrate their talents and projects, and to have the opportunity to connect with the world and grow their network for future career developments.

Reimagining Museums for Climate Action
Registration Deadline:  Friday, Jul 31, 2020
Submission Deadline:  Tuesday, Sep 15, 2020

Reimagining Museums for Climate Action asks designers, architects, academics, artists, poets, philosophers, museum professionals and the public at large to radically (re)imagine and (re)design the museum as an institution, to help bring about more equitable and sustainable futures in the climate change era. The competition aims to explore how museums can help society transform to a low carbon future, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and safeguard ecosystems.

Tactical Urbanism NOW!
Registration Deadline:  Saturday, Nov 21, 2020
Submission Deadline:  Sunday, Nov 29, 2020

Tactical Urbanism proposes an alternative method to achieve an urban regeneration that works mainly as the small scale of a street, a block or a building. Similar to the way acupuncture inserts needles into one part of the body to boost the well-being of the entire organism, a "tactical" project can lead to positive changes in a whole neighborhood. The challenge of this competition is to encourage participants to imagine a city where public space goes beyond the traditional conception of a park, square or a street. The idea is to experiment with new urban scenarios, which are able to promote social exchange, community activities and citizens interaction through the implementation of multifunctional designs. Use your imagination and propose a concept that takes urban space into another level, transforming it to become more playful, lively and welcoming!

WARMING Architecture Competition
Registration Deadline:  Sunday, Aug 2, 2020
Submission Deadline:  Monday, Aug 3, 2020

WARMING calls on students and professionals from the fields of architecture, planning, and design to submit projects that respond to our changing climate and environment. WARMING competition participants are asked to propose new or adapted architecture that addresses issues of global warming. Participants are free to experiment and explore the subject - designs can be of any program, any scale, and on any site.

Lagos: City of Water Architecture Competition
Registration Deadline:  Monday, Aug 10, 2020
Submission Deadline:  Tuesday, Aug 25, 2020

The purpose of this competition is to engage the creativity of young architects with Lagos (Nigeria) being the context. For the design competition, you are asked to use your creativity to design a building, structure or masterplan that helps envision a future for Lagos on water. Your project should make significant use of water space, whether floating, submerged and/or built over water. You can focus on one architectural topic such as affordable housing, sustainable cities or others to act as a starting point for your project. We encourage projects of different scales as we want a large variety of ideas and concepts realized.

Emotions, Architecture, Opioids
Registration Deadline:  Sunday, Aug 2, 2020
Submission Deadline:  Sunday, Aug 9, 2020

Emotions, Architecture, Opioids seeks to explore the emotional impact of architecture: how the built environment can make people feel and behave in certain ways – similar to art or music. At the same time, the brief asks participants to consider the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States, and how architecture can be used to solve problems both for the individual and for society as a whole. The goal of the competition is to present an idea that combines opioid treatment through methadone distribution with ways to combat stigma relating to drug dependency, located at a site in Venice, Los Angeles.
