Ordered by registration and submission due date, here are some stand-out listings to consider.

To BE or not to BQE
Register/Submit Deadline: Monday, Jul 20, 2020

As the theme of the IPA’s 2020 Residency, we ask applicants to research and envision what might replace the BQE along a portion of this anachronistic piece of Moses infrastructure. With support of the IPA, each team will engage the Community Board(s) and reach out to the community stakeholders through which their chosen BQE portion passes. The final projects will be exhibited publicly and published as a volume of the IPA Residency series. Through research and collaboration with City officials, the Fellows are asked not only to develop their individual project but are encouraged to collaborate with each other.

Re-Imagining Railway Stations: Connecting Communities
Registration Deadline: Friday, Sep 11, 2020
Submission Deadline: Tuesday, Sep 15, 2020

Network Rail and RIBA Competitions has launched an international competition to shape the future of Britain’s railway stations. The competition will provide architects, engineers and designers the chance to improve the travel experience for the millions of passengers who use Britain’s railway, and leave a lasting legacy on station design. It asks designers to reimagine small to medium-sized stations – which make up 80% of all those on Britain’s railway – so they can better serve the needs of both passengers and their local communities.

The HOME Competition 2020
Registration Deadline: Sunday, Oct 25, 2020
Submission Deadline: Monday, Oct 26, 2020

How do we define “home”? Although our ideas about home are constantly being rethought, the careful examination of “home” has recently come to our attention for architects and nonarchitects alike. Almost everyone has had to confront their perspective of “home” as they have adapted work places, social gatherings, fitness routines, and everyday life. We now not only internalize a home, but look at how our homes digitally connect to the rest of the world. The HOME Competition invites all designers to explore ideas of domestic architecture for the future.

Shifting Ground
Register/Submit Deadline: Thursday, Dec 31, 2020

At a time in which our relationships to both private spaces and the public realm have been thrown open to question, what lessons can we learn from looking carefully at the world around us? How can we better understand the places where we live—the histories that have shaped them; the social, economic, and political mechanisms that make them function as they do today; the communities they structure; their possibilities for the future? Can we learn to document our surroundings not only in terms of color, composition, and texture, but by thinking through their impacts and their potential to shape more healthy, just, and resilient communities? The Architectural League of New York invites you to submit photographs, videos, or drawings accompanied by short written observations about the spaces around you, with the goal of creating a visual archive that captures the relationship between society and the built environment in this unprecedented time.
