The Association of Licensed Architects has recently announced 39 winners of the 2022 ALA Design Awards, now in its 24th year of recognizing design achievement throughout the country.
Projects were awarded in the commercial, institutional, residential, multi-family, religious, interior, and unbuilt categories. Each design category included Gold, Silver, and Merit Award winners, with the overall Don Erickson Presidential Award being given to SchultzWerk Architecture’s “visually exciting” Full Service Car Wash project in Brookfield, WI.
“This year’s projects were exceptional,” ALA Executive Director Joanne Sullivan said of the collected winners. “Many focused on our human experience and interaction within the space. Other projects brought in natural elements to mimic the surroundings, with special attention to sustainability.”
The awards were judged by a panel that included Olson Kundig’s Blair Payson and four others. The winners were announced via a special ceremony emceed by UrbanLab Principal Christopher Groesbeck last week in Medinah, IL. The full list of winning projects can be viewed below.

SERIOUSLY?.... Gold Awards went to a car wash and industrial building. Meanwhile, a fantastic adaptive reuse and landmark building restoration in Peoria (IL) only merited Silver Award and Merit status. Obviously, the outcome reveals little appreciation for heritage architecture. The judges ought to be ashamed.
