Check out the winning projects of the 2022 International Architecture Awards

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design has announced its list of more than 150 winning projects for the annual International Architecture Awards in partnership with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

The program dates to 2005 and is meant to honor the best new projects from anywhere in the world that "exemplify design excellence and architectural ambition and deliver meaningful social impact to the public for which they serve."

This year’s list was whittled down from over 450 submissions representing 48 different countries, with projects as remote as the new UNESCO cultural heritage pavilion in Greenland and as high-profile as the 55 Yonge Street high-rise in Toronto making the cut alongside HAL Architects’ controversial Sky Pool, Mecanoo and Beyer Blinder Belle’s award-winning Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, and the stunning new Shanghai Astronomy Museum from Ennead, to name only a few. Projects were commended for their demonstrated environmental concerns and commitment to restoration and renovation projects over the wastefulness of new building. In this regard, the 2022 crop represents an industry-wide tide change that has been taken up by several leading professional architectural organizations across the globe.

"This year’s winning projects show remarkable sensitivity to their surroundings and local cultures, inclusive design, and sustainable solutions," Chicago Athenaeum CEO Christian Narkiewicz-Laine said at the announcement. "It is indeed a great moment when a recognition as important as this helps to bring attention to the remote corners of our incredibly connected but unknowing world, often projects that are born out of scarce resources, and projects for the care of people and communities destined to live in the fragile environment of a climate in flux."
