For INNATUR 6, architects envision a “nature interpretation center”

By Justine Testado|

Monday, Jun 5, 2017

Detail from the winning entry by Kai Zhang.

Results for the sixth edition of the INNATUR competition were recently revealed! The yearly OPENGAP ideas competition challenges designers to create architecture that integrates inventively within nature. At a time when the effects of climate change are happening now and into the future, INNATUR 6 had participants propose their own ideas and interpretations for a museum-like structure that the organizers call a “nature interpretation center”.

Out of 109 proposals from around the globe, the jury ultimately selected the three prize winners and four honorable mentions. Check 'em out below.

1st place: Kai Zhang. Country: China

1st place: Kai Zhang. Country: China

Jury highlights: “The Proposal presents a radically different way of connecting to nature, taking the statement of the contest in a very literally way, but with a completely new approach for understanding and interpreting it. By using architectural resources it takes a clear and convincing element and makes it visible as a basic and obvious element of the nature as it is “time”. It is remarkable the way in which it understands the processes of the natural environment and approaches the project from that concept.”

2nd place: Bozar Ben Zeev. Country: The Netherlands

Jury highlights: “The project has the potential to be a detonator. Its main strength lies in the way that it provides a new spatial relationship between the built and natural space, causing nature and construction to flow in an harmonic and unlimited way, which is represented and expressed through clear and concise architectural language resources.”

3rd prize: Enzo Sessini, Lisa Busmey, Amélie Amblard, Coraline Huot-Marchand. Country: France

Jury highlights: “A very complete proposal that addresses the premises of the competition with a unique gesture and from a very architectural perspective, notable for the emphasis on the diversity of its spaces. Through paths it allows users to have very particular relationships with nature, demonstrating sensitivity to the diverse of the context in which it is immersed.”

Don't forget about the honorable mentions in the gallery below!
