By Josh Niland|

Wednesday, Jun 7, 2023

2023 IPA Summer Fellow Cohort. (Top Row L-R) Alicia Escamilla, Kevin Hofmann, Emmet Sutton (Bottom Row L-R) Immanuel Oni, Abdus Salaam, Liza Goncharenko.

New York’s Institute for Public Architecture (IPA) has announced its 2023 Summer Fellow cohort, featuring six projects that span a range of the various elements (materials, accessibility, community, and space) which form the basis for great public design.

This year’s cohort is comprised of Universidad de las Américas Puebla instructor Alicia Escamilla; Alfred State College professor Kevin Hofmann; Pratt Institute School of Architecture undergraduate Emmet Sutton; Liminal Creative Director Immanuel Oni; independent architectural researcher Abdus Salaam; and BRUT's Liza Goncharenko.

The IPA shares: “Projects include a formal exploration of seeds as physical and symbolic material (Alicia Escamilla), the creation of a publicly accessible creative project examining the use of Robert Smithson’s decaying trees (Kevin Hofmann), an investigation of the corridor and its relation to the room (Emmet Sutton), an exploration of how to reclaim public spaces for community well-being and belonging (Immanuel Oni), research of societal beautification and personal mindfulness (Abdus Salaam) and an architectural graphic novel (Liza Goncharenko).”

As part of the program, fellows will live and work together for 11 weeks at the landmark Governor's Island Block House, where they will each engage in a series of public programs and other internal cohort activities.

An open library featuring the fellows will be held each weekend from 12pm–4pm at the Block House from June 10th through the 12th of August. Additional information about the IPA's programs and residencies can be found here.
